You are having a problem finding all major Angular version and features? How many versions of Angular are there? What is the first version of Angular and when is the next one coming?
We will cover all the Angular versions and features of every version starting from Angular 4 in a few sentences. Promise it will be short!
We will also update this page when new major versions are about to be published!
Angular Versions: AngularJS vs Angular 2+
AngularJS is an older version of Angular. It is based on JavaScript and it is obviously used for the front-end implementation as well. This first version was originally developed in 2009 and it is now considered as an obsolete Angular version not much used in the industry anymore.
Angular 2 is complete rewrite of AngularJS. The main difference between Angular 2+ and AngularJS is that Angular 2+ is totally based on Typescript web framework. Today, all major versions are very similar to Angular 2, and heavily different from AngularJS.
Angular 4
First of all, there were major improvements in the compiler in this version. Developers were able to reduce the size of JavaScript code generated by Agular’s HTML and Typescript. One more major improvement in this version is that the developers placed animations in a separate package to reduce the unnecessary code. In the end, these improvements give us a quicker and smaller framework.
Angular 5
Next, Angular 5 offers CLI Workspaces to manage multiple Angular projects, and the process of creating progressive web apps is more straightforward.
Angular 6
New CLI command ng update
allows you upgrade application’s components. Moreover, another new CLI command ng add
command makes it faster to install popular libraries and packages.
Angular 7
The addition of prompts that explain the goals and methods of elements in Angular 7 made it even easier to use the CLI.
Angular 8
The release of Angular 8 brought ivy (an updated compiler), and the reason for ivy is to take the responsibility of the outdated View Engine runtime and compiler. Ivy was designed to speed up app performance and minimize bundle size.
Angular 9
Angular 9 declared Ivy as the default compiler for all applications. Smaller bundle sizes improved the performance drastically.
Angular 10
Developers added integration interface and updated the compiler resulting in a better and higher performance.
Angular 11
Next, Angular 11 introduces Component Test Harnesses to help with the testing of Angular Material components, whereas Angular 10 concentrated on quality and performance enhancements rather than new capabilities. Automatic font inlining is another feature of the eleventh edition.
Angular 12
The main goals of Angular 12 were to remove legacy components, increase developer control over the project, and provide stylistic enhancements.
Angular 13
This version brought the discontinuation of Support for View Engine (the original Angular renderer), Internet Explorer 11, and the previous versions of Node.js before 12.20.0. This update made it simple to create dynamic components.
Angular 14
Strictly Typed Forms, a long-awaited feature of Angular 14, pleased developers. Many engineers see it as the biggest improvement since the introduction of Ivy renderer. Previously, TypeScript was unable to detect many common problems in Agular’s Reactive or Model-Driven Forms because there were no type definitions in them. Luckily, Angular 14 solves this problem.
Angular 15
Lastly, Angular 15 went live in November 2022. This version includes improved error stack trace, tree-shakable router and HttpClient (which means less dead code), image directive and standalone APIs are now available to the public. I have also written an entire article on Angular 15, so go ahead and check it out!
Conclusion
Finally, this Angular versions and features blog comes to an end. We hope you have a better grasp now on all major Angular features. Who knows what else we can expect in the future?
